Biomass Processing Instructions
Charm Industrial
The Charm Industrial system requires biomass, usually wheat straw or corn stover, to be processed into smaller particles (2 - 4 mm) to efficiently pyrolyze the material in order to yield carbon rich bio-oil. This process includes operating a tub grinder, which chops the bales into smaller straw pieces, before transferring to a series of mills and hoppers to further chop and hammer the material to the desired size.
Formal instructions for operators needed to be documented to ensure safe operation onsite so the engineers would not have to be present. The instructions I created included diagrams and steps for operating various processing equipment and transfer augers, totaling in 13 different subsystems. The instructions also included safety measures for each system, maintenance involving how to grease motor bearings, removal of metal and non-organic debris from hammer mills, steps to remove netting from bales, etc. Motors attached to transfer augers were enabled and ramped up to operating speed with a GUI, this also required instructions in the procedure. These instructions were later used to interview and train on-site operators of the system.
